Why Do I Need to Lift Weights?
I get it. You don’t want to be a bodybuilder. You don’t want to be a powerlifter. So why do YOU need to lift weights? You just want to be healthy and toned and feel good in a swimsuit.
I get it. Well kind of. I don’t want to be a bodybuilder or a powerlifter either, but I do like being strong, so I only kind of get it. But I’m pretty good at being empathetic and I’ve trained a LOT of people over the years, so let’s just imagine I understand exactly where you’re coming from.
First things first, the “toned” build you’re looking for has muscle. Ignoring all of the other benefits we’re going to talk about in a minute, the body type you like is probably built by weight training. You need SOME muscle to have any sort of tone. What do you think you’re toning if you don’t have some muscle? You want toned bones?
Increasing your muscle mass will allow you to burn more calories every day. This increase in calories will let you eat more food every day, making weight loss or maintenance MUCH easier. Remember if we’re going to do this for life, it has to be sustainable. 1000 calories a day is not a permanent solution.
Being a little stronger will help you prevent injury. More muscle and more strength will make your body more resilient. Healthy people can stay exercising and taking care of themselves longer. This is true both in the short term, avoiding injuries, and in the long term, having strength and mobility as you age.
I’d imagine your concern is that you don’t want to get bulky. I understand that, but I want you to ignore that fear. When you were in HS and in College you knew a TON of guys that were exclusively trying to get big and bulky. They went to the gym and mimicked bodybuilders and ate a lot of calories and I’m willing to bet that you didn’t know dozens and dozens of overly muscled men. And they had peak testosterone levels helping them (whether you’re a middle-aged man or a woman of any age, those guys had a lot more Testosterone flowing through them than you have now). I think it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll get too muscular on accident.
I want to help you change your life. If you are ready to get some help, then send me an email at corey@coreblendtraining.com so I can help.
Sincerely,
Corey Davis
