“SAVE THIS BLOG POST FOR WHEN RUNNING STARTS TO HURT.”

I told you all that I wanted to be a better running coach. A BIG issue I see with people is that they get hurt when they run. I think this happens for a few different reasons and I'm going to try to address one here. That may sound lame that I'm only addressing one, but it was a lot of work just to do this one, so bear with me.

First, I think people have it in their head that they need to "tough it out" through running. They know running is going to hurt so when something bothers them, they don't question it, they just hurt themselves more by running through it. This is a bad idea. Stop running when you're damaging yourself.

Second, I think a lot of people do too much too soon. Either because they are impatient or because they have a good amount of cardiovascular fitness and want to run until their lungs are taxed rather than until their ankles, calves, hips, knees, and back have had enough. This is best addressed through a conservative build up over time, ie, emailing me for a running plan.

Finally, I think there are certain tight areas that need addressing and clients need help addressing those. With that in mind, here's a thing I've been working on for a few weeks. It is a bank of mobility exercises organized by what body part they work on.

These movements require minimum equipment and should help with the areas that are most likely to give you issues as a runner. Everybody is different, so try ALL of the moves for a given area and see which ones you like and appear to give you relief and then CONSISTENTLY do them every day.
